Yeah, I'd have to ask Adam about that one, lol. Speaking of which, I had to strip the driver's side window out of his old GSi this morning. Left Dad's car out the front of his house and a passing truck flicked a decent sized stone through the window.

Which hose was it mate? I know I fitted a small piece of blue samco hose into the pipework above the gearbox but I didn't use duct tape on it??? The only place I used duct tape was on top of the throttle body to cover it from and foreign things getting in

It's under the intake manifold, next to a blue section of hose. My phone went flat, so I couldn't get a pic of it. When I go up next week, I'll make sure the phone is charged.

adam_92

So under the manifold near the starter motor? The blue piece of pipe was almost right next to the radiator from memory. It's been a while since I looked at it.

So under the manifold near the starter motor? The blue piece of pipe was almost right next to the radiator from memory. It's been a while since I looked at it.

Yeah, there was one blue piece under the intake and one just over the top of the gearbox. So, two blue sections in total.

adam_92
3rd September 2012, 12:27 AM
Oh ok, I only remember the bit near the radiator over the top of the gearbox, probably because I could see it from the top. So which hose has the hole taped up?

chris_r
3rd September 2012, 02:15 PM
It's actually the plastic pipe section itself. One of the outlet connectors had been hacksawed off, then taped up.

adam_92
3rd September 2012, 02:29 PM
The solid plastic pipe? I think I know which one your talking about now. That came off the 1.6 because the z18 one was cracked/split. It already had the tape on when I took it off the c16 so didn't think anything of it... Come to think of it that's probably why my gsi used so much water when it had the c16 in it. It never even crossed my mind when I swapped it to the z18.

So I had my sunroof replaced today under the Webasto recall. As some on the forum already know, they were recalled due to the glass part of the unit was prone to 'debonding' as they put it. Anyways can't complain as the swap over didn't cost me anything :)

Fixed my cooling fan problem... Basically had a p1540 code (coolant control module malfunction) got a new module a while back at the wreckers and fitted it. Still no luck so thought I had a got a dodgy module from the wreckers but I cbf changing it again through the winter as my thermostat is faulty so doesn't get very hot anyway. So today with the weather starting to get warmer again I decided to check the thing out again. I couldn't find which relay controlled it as a Dick somewhere along the line has torn the fuse pages out of the manual so about an hour of trawling through the forums and I came to realise that the engine cooling actually has 2 7.5amp fuses. One was there and perfectly intact which made me originally think everything was ok but as soon as I realised the 2nd fuse was missing from the slot I fitted a new one, dash light gone!! Had the car idling in the warm garage for 30 mins or so. Hits 92 and the fans kick in and drops back to 87ish. Did this 3 or 4 times... PERFECT!!!!!

After much farting about, the new engine is at least in the GSi. Still got the majority of the accessories to hook up, fill up the fluids and a few other bits to do and it'll be on the road again. Again, that won't happen till next weekend, but it shouldn't take too long to finish.

Oh, adam_92 here's what I was talking about. For the uninformed, this is what brought down my last motor, just that bit of duct tape where there was once an outlet connector.

Yeah I thought that's where it was. That complete pipe came off the c16 motor as the one that came with the z18 was split/cracked on the end where the blue hose is so I replaced it. It came off the c16 like that so I didn't think there was a problem with it and had to fit the blue pipe bit to make it work with the gsi radiator.

Glad to hear that hazrd. They are unbeatable value for money IMHO. Really can't see how they can improve a street tyre from this level (in terms of performance per $, and grip vs longevity ratio)!

Then again, I have yet to try the Neova AD08, which gman loves, but then that costs more I think, and may not last as long...I am sure he can clarify on this!

That's low so could definitely be the coil pack. Did you check the plug gaps (0.8mm best for higher boost), plug tips (fouled etc), heat range (plugs too cold) etc??

Yeah replaced plugs completely with new ones and appeared to be gapped correctly (will check again with mechanic).
old ones were fouled due to running rich.

Have ordered a new pack from autovaux anyway so will soon see!

Nope. Also, it doesn't seem as highly strung an engine as the last one was. Seemed quite happy to sit around 5-6k as I was pushing it through the bends near Auburn. Gonna drive it around near my parents place for a bit, before I think about bringing it back to town. Stripped the SRi wheels too, ready for the powder coaters on Monday.

What? You got something CHEAP from Black Diamond? I was there today getting a JF Viva throttle body and that set me back $125. Damn wreckers. However, I also ordered a second hand power steering rack from an E36 for $225 from ASV Euro Spares for the E30.

I once had some Holotype-Rs on a 96 Excel, but they were 15s in a 4x114.3 PCD. My mate still has them seeing as they also happen to fit his 910 Bluey pretty well.

Got my steering rack for the E30. Need to get the rest of the power steering gear for it.

Ordered some new tyres for the GSi, Sailun Atrezzo ZS+ Asymmetrical 195/45R16. I'm not expecting these to be anything great, but they're cheap in this size at $120 each. Still they'd have to kick the crap out of the cheesy 14s it's running now. Hopefully, I get to pick up the wheels from the powder coaters in the morning. I'll need to paint the centre caps myself as they wouldn't do them because they're plastic and would melt in the oven.

Straighten my steering wheel (it had been annoyingly crooked since I put it on)

Still waiting in these damn rims to be finished at the powder coaters. In the same time, I've ordered and received the new badges to go on the wheels too. Will need to paint the centre caps, but that's no big deal. Whilst I'm at it, I've got an engine cover to paint too. Still, first things first, I've gotta get the car home from the parent's place yet.

Also received a call from my 'mates' at Maughan Thiem Hyundai today asking if I'd like to book my van in for a service. Given that they stole from me, ripped me off and screwed me over, I pretty much told them where they can put their business......

how did you remove your holden logo from the wheel? i cant figure out how the fk to remove mine lol

i kinda hacked it off haha.. I got a screw driver underneath it and basically loosened it up until it was off the actual steering wheel and only held on by the three prong things. Then got a knife and cut the prongs off the back... Then sanded them back smooth. It was a PITA but well worth it.
So do you reckon I should get blue leather for the steering wheel?

only issue was wind noise. anyone got any advice to cope with the wind apart from putting it inside the car?

Use the fully enclosed case or use a heavily wind socked external Mic. About the only options unfortunately.

ive seen people sticky tape some plastic 3/4 of the way around the case, you can stall/create an eddy behind the case and it doesnt get the wind noise...
hard to explain, but look on youtube, theres a few examples.

I bought a wind sock for mine from Amazon for $10 + shipping. It looks like a fuzzy mic cover. Works a treat

what kind of microphone do they have ? Is it built in or an external. With interviews, we used to face them with the wind (so backwards) and put a cover on with long hairs (much like a fox tail).

Internal. The new GoPro3 is apparently a little better for wind noise from reports...

Kinda been busy with the cars of late. Last night I got the E36 steering rack ready to go into the E30. Hopefully, I will have the motor sitting in the engine bay by the end of the week. This will require my new custom steering shaft being cut to the appropriate length first and fixing the rack in properly.

Tonight, installed a new head unit in the iLoad. I was damn sick of having cables for this, that and everything else, so I got a reasonably cheap touchscreen unit off ebay that has iPod control, GPS, etc. Even works with the steering controls right out of the box too. Got a reversing camera half in and by half, I mean it's mounted but not completely wired in just yet. Ran out of time, so I'll leave that to another time.

its getting there!
2 hundreths off a 59sec lap so thats the next goal.

keen for a brake upgrade next, could probably get away with better pads (or a VXR setup) but may go bigger.
Nothing worse than not trusting brakes.

may head out next month for no-limits night

Well, there's been far too many Track Opels on this forum dying/almost dying from brake failure.

Good job for the track day! What pads and discs are you using now?

I gave my wifes ralliart a good thrashing the other day and let me say the standard discs and pads on the astra g turbo are a hell of a lot better
