Had a rather eventful day. Last day or two, I thought the van was making funny noises coming from the clutch release bearing. But, in true Hyundai fashion, I rolled into the Torrensville depot swearing and cursing at the fact the clutch just gave out. Rang douchebag aka "mechanic", reckons it had nothing to do with him and is trying to dismiss any claim to repair, but as they had the engine out and threw it in the back of the van with all the oily parts, I'd say the clutch disc had been contaminated and was then put back in without any due care. Now, I'm normally a very quiet and understanding person, but I don't think I've ever abused anyone over the phone like I did.

Anyway, who wants to attend an Elizabethan bonfire? BYO food and drinks though. It'll be good to watch that POS go up in flames. Meanwhile, I've hired a Hiace, which I must say as much as I give them crap, they're not that bad and now I'm thinking of getting one. Otherwise, I'm tempted to get a Ford Transit.

Put engine cover back on the SRi and cleaned up a couple of little things in the engine bay. Also fitted new front engine mount, which makes the gearshift feel bloody awesome now.

iLoad got towed again. The guys who did the engine work didn't have enough room to do anything on it, so they've sent it to another workshop near by. New guy is awesome to deal with and understands I need the van for work, not to sit in someone's yard for four months. He also seems to think I should be able to get a replacement clutch from Exedy under warranty too, which would be a big relief. From what I have told the guy, he believes that it is the clutch disc that is worn and not the clutch release bearing (although, that'll probably be stuffed too).

Bunged the control arm bushes on the E30. Went to change tie rod ends. Swore at it a bit and gave up. Buggers are seized on and no amount of fast break seems to make them want to budge. I'm kinda over trying to make this damn E36 rack fit. I may as well just find a decent E30 PAS rack.

Clutch is officially rooted in the van too. It'll cost $1400 to get another (although the d1cks that refitted it should be paying, seeing as they're the ones who f***ed it up). Bonfire time, I reckon.

Disassembled and started cleaning up the calipers, ready for painting. They'll be painted blue to match the carriers I received.

In terms of the iLoad, the thrust bearing crapped itself and bent all the fingers on the pressure plate at a 90 degree angle in towards the friction plate. "Mechanic" tells me, "it's just something that happened". Like f***, more like someone didn't apply grease to the input shaft when they put the engine back in. Even if the shaft had grease on it, after spending the best part of three months exposed to the weather, I would've cleaned it and applied fresh grease. What I saw (and I should've taken pics whilst I had the chance), looked as if it was really old caked on grease. Not something I would expect from an engine that was only put in about six weeks ago. I'm supposed to be picking it up tomorrow, but I'll take that with a very big grain of salt.

Thinking of trading it in for a Hiace as soon as I can. Probably go for an automatic diesel this time around. I've been driving a petrol manual Hiace for the last week and my biggest gripe was apparently entry/egress to and from the van, but it's not as bad as I thought. Not as comfortable as the iLoad, but the only reason the iLoad needs to be comfortable is for when you're waiting for a tow truck.

Same happened to mine. DRMAT says he got an extra rattle or two as a result of fitting a new mount, but I didn't. Definitely makes a difference in gear shifting. Speaking of which, you need to get yourself a M-Tech short shifter. Makes a difference you wouldn't believe.

Short shift kit: http://www.mathijssentechnics.nl/?View=page&part_id=170001&hid=542&lhid=&lvid=&mid=86
New shifter bushes: http://www.mathijssentechnics.nl/?View=page&part_id=650004&hid=542&lhid=&lvid=&mid=86

Not the cheapest, but I bought mine in the group buy a little while back. With the bushes, it pays to replace them whilst you've got the shifter out. The link does say for F13 and F18 gearboxes, but no Corsa C has an F18 box, but I assume this is meant to be for the F17 box that the SRi has.

Went back today with MitchVIC (http://www.opelaus.com/forums/member.php?8152-MitchVIC) and pulled out the sportier seats then my cd G and also pulled out the gauges and front fog light switch.

Got some QFM HPX pads from Greg gslrallysport for the SRi. Thought I had wrong ones, thanks to the stupid Bendix catalogue, but Greg was nice enough to give me the correct info and tell me he did indeed send the correct ones. So now, I've only got the rotors to sort out. My mate is going to machine down the spigot rings to fit and re-drill the rotors to four stud for me, which according to faneca cost him around $320 for the white Astra. Still tossing up whether to get the rotors that I got from Adam machined as they have some lipping around the edge or whether I should just buy some brand new ones. If budget allows, I'll probably go with the latter.

I was going to head down to U-Pull-It today, but time obviously got away from me. And given that my brother's Combo van packed it in the other day, it means I better extract the digit and get the wagon up and going again, before I do any work on the Combo (If I do need to work on it, it'll be copping a 1.8). And I'll be getting rid of one van tomorrow too, only problem is, that it won't be the Hyundai.

Haha, I'd be having a party too, only to watch the thing burn. I swear, this van makes any Great Wall or Chery look like a reliable option.

Went and ordered some DBA T2 rotors for the SRi today. Was going to use the rotors that Adam gave me, but after getting the verniers out, it would appear that even after machining the lips off them, I'd be borderline with the minimum thickness at around 22mm. Not that they wouldn't be any good still, but considering the kinds of plans I have for down the track, I may as well just go the whole hog now when doing the brakes and do it all properly.

Take the clutch switch out and test it with a multimeter (on resistance, with the switch open and then closed). There will be no resistance with the switch open, but there should be with it closed. Only thing that really affects is your cruise control. As for your O2 error, see if you can find a pair of sensors to test it with (scab them from a wrecker or a friend, as long they're from a Z18XE and in working order). If the error doesn't go away, then I've got bad news for you, as you may need repairs to the ECU. I've seen the same errors manifest them on another SRi that I've worked on in the past and I'm sure that's what would've needed to be done, had I still been talking to that particular person.

Embarassingly only just discovered how to turn on the interior light in the Barina LOL It's that awkward moment when the 'car guy' (ie. me) discovers a switch in his car for the very first time with the aid of a n00b (ie. wife).

I replaced the headlight switch with the LED version last weekend and today driving home noticed the knob to turn headlights on was sticking out a bit. I knew it had a bit of movement in and out anyway but when i pushed it in the wife noticed the interior lights come on hahaha To be fair it's pretty well concealed and i only discovered it by pure chance... it doesn't click to suggest anything turns on, no icon on it, i just thought it was a shitty quality rotary switch and had always thought it was odd there was no button to turn on the interior lights!

Honestly now... how many others knew this? :D

Also, had a closer look at the E30's brake lines, seeing as the brake union nuts are impossibly seized to the point that no amount of WD40, Permatex Fast Break or even the ATF/Acetone mix will break them. Not too mention that some of the lines are looking a bit rusty. I'm thinking I may have to replace the entire brake line set and I may as well add in some braided hoses too.

I saw this and was going to order one, but as I work as a contractor and I've got time off over Xmas, I thought I may as well wait (need to keep some money one side). Plus, I need to pull my finger out and get this brake swap done with.

Doesn't help I'm still having dramas with a certain vehicle of Korean origin. One of the injector pipes is still leaking and I've gone and ordered some new pipes for it. $150 shipped from Fourgreen (probably cost something ridiculous like $500-600 from the stealers). Also has a leak in another low pressure AC pipe, which would've been handy to know a few days ago, seeing as we've had a couple of stinkers here in Adelaide over the last few days. I have a slight oil leak and a coolant leak too, which I'm more than pissed off with, seeing as it's feeling more like I've been shafted with the repairs to this thing. I can fix it myself, but that's not the point as it should've been sorted by the idiots that were paid to fix it properly in the first place.

Got the new injector pipes for the iTurd today. Took all of 10 mins to fit them and bleed the system. Runs a lot smoother now and for now, I can't smell diesel pouring in through the vents.

Did a bit of ringing around about quotes to get my rotors re-drilled for the SRi (seeing as my mate is being a little b*tch about doing it). Rang a couple of brake places, one referred me to a mob called Rodtech who specialise in just about everything custom for hot rods, etc. and the other, Wheelworx at Keswick. Rodtech are shut at present, so I rang Wheelworx, who said it'll take a day or two and cost $33 per rotor, which I'd have to say is a bit cheaper than what faneca got slugged at that joint on South Road. Only problem is, I have to wait till the new year, but at that price I am not complaining.

Dropped my rotors off to Growly Custom Machining at Windsor Gardens the other day for re-drilling to 4x100, he said $20 per rotor which isn't too bad, considering that Wheelworx wanted $33 each and I know of one place that charges a whopping $150 per disc. The guy said he'll sort my spigot rings too for a little extra, which will be nice. Hopefully, they'll be ready to go tomorrow or Friday and maybe get around to fitting it all on the weekend.

I'm now in need to service the iTurd again. It's now 13,000kms since the new engine and turbo went in. Still have an oil leak to track down and I need to adjust the near on non-existent handbrake. I replaced the injector pipes the other week, which I must say made a noticeable difference, not only just the removal of diesel fumes from the ventilation system, but the thing boosts really well now (and I probably get an extra 80-100kms from a tank). I don't actually remember this thing running so well in the past 12 months.

chris_r
3rd January 2014, 11:43 PM
Got the rotors back today. All up $60 is what it cost for the re-drilling of the two rotors and machining down the spigot rings adam_92 gave me (which appeared to be spigot rings for alloy wheels in the first place). I must say, Matt @ GCM does some pretty awesome work. Works out of his shed at home (he has another full-time job elsewhere), but the quality is impressive. Those spigot rings were machined to sit the chamfer behind the disc, so they won't accidentally come off when changing the wheels either. Now all I gotta do is fit them.

Volvo are very good with warranty.

Last month I serviced the car elsewhere as the dealer was quoting near double ($900) the price of what the independent Volvo specialist was charging.

The mechanic mentioned the brake pump was leaking oil. I called up the Volvo dealer and they were happy to have a look. As it was short notice, no courtesy car available, but they dropped me off to and from work 10mins away.

They found the vacuum pump was leaking oil and replaced it on the day. No dramas and even washed and vacuumed my car. Very professional. I wouldn't hesitate to take my car to that dealer if they didn't charge like a wounded bull!

I hope the XC60 doesn't cost me a fortune to maintain either! lol... The regular servicing is reasonable if you take it to an independent Volvo specialist and I'm happy to pay to make sure it's serviced property. It's the other non-service repairs that I'm worried about.

Where do your friends service their car? The C30 doesn't seem overly complicated so shouldn't cost that much. But if you take your [insert any european brand car] to the dealer it's going to cost a fortune. Let me know if your friends want a recommendation on where to take their Volvo for service ( Vectracious told me about them)

I also generally supply my own Fully Synthetic oil, brake pads/discs to save on parts mark up cost. I also change my own wiper blades ordered from the UK- an easy 5-10 min job to save $50-70.

They must love the coffee there!

I'm all for paying a fair price for everything, but don't really like being overcharged by the dealer.

But if they are happy to pay the cost, they shouldn't complain.

Fixed the Pulsar the other day, a 2nd hand high pressure power steering hose from the local wrecking yard and a new battery was all it needed. Got another auto gearbox selector switch for the wagon and the high pressure power steering hose and reservoir bracket for the E30 and some other little bits and pieces.

Ordered a diagnostic scan tool specific for BMW (need it for the E30 and the sister's E34 5-series) and a S54/M54 coil-on-plug kit for the E30. The COP kit will tidy up half the wiring inside the engine bay and eliminate the need for spark plug leads, taking most of the points of failure out with it. Plus, the M54 coil packs are around $40-50 each, whereas the M42 (which is the engine in my E30) units are anywhere between $110-$180 each. The COP kit, including all four coils cost $266 shipped from the US.

And between now and Sunday, I need to clean the carport out, do the brake swap on the SRi and service the van like I was meant to last week. Not to mention, I've got another set of calipers that need to be cleaned up.

Haha, funny considering that all international mail will either come through Sydney or Melbourne first before it's sent to its destination. Drive 1600kms round trip to deliver one parcel, I somehow don't think Auspost would make it worth my while. If it were sent EMS, I'm not sure if it's Parcel Post or Star Track that handle it in Melbourne. At Messenger Post, we used to handle EMS parcels in Adelaide Metro up until 18 months ago, then it got palmed off to Parcel Post and now Star Track are in on it.

Recently redid the centre console on my TS turbo, that grey sticky shit from factory is terrible. Used brake fluid and a kitchen scourer and gently scrubbed it all off. Black plastic underneath, too easy! Well... i did buy plastic primer and paint before that for $35... waste..........

Yeah well you wouldnt need them to fit the 5 stud hub as the rotors should be right. Were they not just fouling on dirt chris?

They fit over the 4 stud hub but they didn't fit over the 5 stud ones not that I really tried to.

They'd fit over the top if you test fitted them with the rotor still on. But once you take the rotor off, there's another larger stepping that the spigot ring won't fit over. According to the measurements, the inner side of the spigot ring is 57mm. The centre bore of the original rotor is 60mm. So yeah, 3mm out.

Well, if I were fitting a Z20LET or Z22SE, 5 stud conversion would be p1ss easy. And I did clean the hub face up pretty good.

faneca
8th January 2014, 11:20 PM
Yeah from memory there is a 45 degree chamfer at the base of the hub.

chris_r
8th January 2014, 11:24 PM
Yeah from memory there is a 45 degree chamfer at the base of the hub.

Yes, but that chamfer on the inside measures 60mm at it's widest point, which would be the size I'm aiming for. Those spigot rings were actually meant for the wheels and not the brakes. The wheels have a 57mm centre bore, but the rotor centre bore is larger to just fit over that last step towards the face of the hub. I'll have to take a pic in the light and show you what I mean about that stepping.

Haha, 45 odd degrees and I'm burning my hands on the damn iFail. I go and fix the supposed leaking air con pipe the other day, only to go for a regas and find the compressor's clutch had lunched itself and seized up good. Anyway, back to Stanvac Wreckers in searing heat and no air con to get another compressor for $295 (second hand, be f***ed if I'm getting wallet raped for a new one). I get home, chuck the thing up on the ramps and hook straight into changing the compressor. Whilst everything is still hot, mind you. And to top it off, I give it an oil change that I've been meaning to do for the last few weeks. Now, why would I be as silly as to inflict such pain on myself? Tomorrow's only 46 degrees, and if I can get a regas, I won't have to suffer another stinking day in a sauna with wheels.

adam_92
15th January 2014, 11:20 PM
Took the missus polo gti in to see what was wrong with the aircon. Bearing in mind, we had the compressor and another pump in the dash replaced 29/11/13 with genuine used items from a 10,000km old car (practically brand new) the diagnosis... the compressor has seized causing metal filings and sludge to go through the whole system and block it all up, aparantly it now needs a complete new aircon system for a nice price of $3k. Spoke to our friend/vw mechanic who did the work and sourced the parts for us and he is fuming. It was one of his friends who regassed the system and the vw mechanic recons he has overfilled the gas... fun times especially seeing as its gonna hit 47 tomorrow and has been mid 40s all week.

Ouch! Who's going to pay for it?

What is it with VW and air conds?

I had my compressor in my GTI replaced under warranty with a revised part (4 years on, no problems touch wood). Very common problem.

Japanese cars have the best and most reliable air conds by far.
