Hi Peeps!

I want to improve my exhaust, and maybe other aspects of my OPC. Can anyone suggest good engineers in Melbs? They will have to deal with top line pre existing gear. The exhaust in an Insignia OPC is already a fully tuned Remus. So they will need to know their shit. Any ideas please?

There's an Insignia OPC owner here in Adelaide who went to get a new exhaust done, amazingly he was told he would be wasting his money if he went ahead with it, due to it allegedly being of a really good design from factory.

fully tuned Remus.

iirc Remus are a pretty good brand, and if its "fully tuned" then why bother changing it?

imo id be putting the money into an tune, then you will definitly feel the difference

Implying the ecu isnt "fully tuned" either.

sounds pretty beasty from the factory, never seen one irl though.

Started some work on the E30 again. Pulled the E30 steering rack out, disassembled steering shaft and using took the top knuckle off the E30 shaft, joined it on to the steering shaft from a TS Astra. What this does is hopefully give me a steering shaft that won't foul on the extractors for when I put the E36 Compact steering rack in. For those that wonder why I'm using an E36 rack in the E30, it's that the E36 rack is a full turn L2L quicker than the original E30 racks. That, and I'm going from manual steering to power steering too.

Next up, refit the rack and start hooking everything else up underneath the car. Probably look at getting the front ARB off a six cylinder E30 too and fitting that out with poly bushes. I'd say the car needs more low at the front, but I'm guessing the sump will say no, didn't realise since I fitted the six cyl front struts, it's actually dipped enough that I can't put the trolley jack under the centre of the crossmember from directly in front of the car.

Pulled the spark plugs out of the car to see if my suspicion of it running rich was true, turns out the plugs are white. Id say they are well and truely gone. This may very well be my issue =P

If they are white it would indicate it running lean, which would possibly tie in with your other issue of the unsteady idle/hunting if it were sucking air somewhere after the AFM.

Replaced the plugs with standard ngk replacements. Tried to go with a cooler plug but from factory it already specifies a 6.

The standard plugs are twin electrode which might have something to do with it (I know they dont both spark at once)

I noticed cylinder number 3 seemed to be leaner than the rest, the other plugs apart from white on the electrode only, seemed to be normal wear according to the ngk website and from memory.

New plugs are in now and while there is a notable improvement, everynow and then there is a missfire.

Rattle under low end accelleration has dropped to a small blip here and there, im now thinking the rattle wasnt a belt tensioner, it might have actually been knock.

I inspected the two pipes coming off the top of the rocker cover to the TB and they check out. No obvious leaks around the maf or the intake pipe. Im going to hopefully pull the TB off to clean it soon (hoping its not a huge stuff around) The hunt continues. :(

Thought I was going to just order a replacement rear wheel bearing/hub for the SRi and nek minnit, there goes another $650. I ended up ordering both hubs for the rear axle (figure it's best to do both anyway), then I thought I may as well take the opportunity to replace the rear rotors and pads, so I order some RDA slotted rotors for the back with Ferodo pads and then I thought stuff it, why not add in some braided lines too and ordered a set of HEL lines. Planning on cleaning up the rear calipers and giving them a coat of paint whilst I'm there too.

All this whilst I'm still waiting on my new heater core and fan resistor to rock up too.

I nuked my bank account for the second time this month by buying tools, parts and detailing supplies for the cars.

I bought a MechPro 194 piece toolbox on sale from Repco so I don't need to keep borrowing my father's stuff to work on the car. Nice set, good range of metric and imperial tools, but I didn't realise until I got home that the actual toolbox doesn't lock the draws with the key, only the top compartment. Bit of a bummer as I want it to be my mobile toolkit for trackdays too. I will just have to pack it in such a way that draws don't open on the drive.

Then I bought new oil, air and fuel filters for the Astra and some Shell Helix Ultra Extra oil. I've been using it in the Corsa and have been happy with it so far.

I also got some sandpaper and compound to restore the headlights on both cars. I did it before on the Corsa but wasn't happy with the work so it needs to be done again. In addition to a foam gun attachment for the water hose for washing and an assortment of soaps and cleaners for the interior, leather, exterior, wheels and engine bay. And to top it off some clay bar, a good sealant and wax. I can't wait to get it done to the cars.

I then bought a new wheel brace as I bent the standard spanner in the Corsa after an over torquing mishap. While I was there I also picked up some proper wheel chocks as I have always used wood scraps or bricks.

Banged my head against the wall a few times today. Pretty frustrated with the previous owner or workshop that worked on Ahyoka last.

So I went to do an oil change this morning and those of you who have SRi Turbos will know the filter is easiest to reach with the drivers side wheel off. So I grab a jack, jackstand, wheel brace and the rest of my toolkit. I take the plastic caps off the bolts and give the wheel brace a go. No movement. Ok, the wheel brace is new, maybe I'm just not used to the amount of force compared to a bar. So I strain and strain and strain against it, not mm of movement from the wheel nuts. Alright, I grab the torque wrench and set it to 110nm and flip the toggle from tighten to loosen for the rachet. Take it easy and squeeze onto the pressure, torque wrench starts clicking. The bolts are all torqued above 110nm, so I incriment it up trying to find it and they start giving at around 126nm. Who the hell did them up so tight, I have no idea, but my money is on a dodgy workshop.

Now I get all the bolts out and grab the wheel to pull it off. The wheel won't budge. I start pulling and pulling from different angles and the stubborn thing isn't giving at all. Infact the car is moving and the jack stand is starting to flex so I decide to calm down and get the WD40. I put the wheel nuts back in take the car down off the jack stand and liberally serve some WD40 into the center bore and along the back edge of the wheel against the hub. Fearing the worst I go and do all 4 wheels for save measure and leave it to sit. Meanwhile I gave the interior a full detail. Vaccumed, did stain removal on floor mats, cleaned all surfaces and cleaned and conditioned the leather. Once that was done the sun was starting to disappear so I decide to give the oil change one more crack quickly.

I get the car up on the jack stand, loosen the bolts a few turns, but leave them on so that the wheel doesn't come flying off. I give it a tug, still not budging. So I get my father for an extra set of hands and we place a block against the wheel and start knocking around with a hammer. It takes a good 5 minutes of hammering the block going around from spoke to spoke before the wheel moves a millimeter. A few more strikes and it's moving more freely, I take the bolts out and after a few good alternating left and right pulls the wheel pops off. The whole hub is rusted like crazy at the point where it enters the center bore of the wheel and the drive shaft pokes out. Just looking at it, the drive shaft is probably never going to come out of the hub if I ever need to take it off.

Anyway, so now the wheel is off I can do the oil change. So I get the oil pan out, get the new oil, new filter and grab my trusty Torx T45 bit. I slide down and reach under the car to crack the sump plug. Firstly it looks like a T40 has been used on it in the past so it's not in great shape. But, I carefully slip the T45 bit in, it's a snug fit, more than it usually is on the Corsa, but I make sure it's fully in and give it a shot. Only, it's taking far more force than usual, hmm. Slowly and gently I keep easing on the pressure and finally start to feel some give, but suddenly have the horrific feeling every car guy gets. That wasn't the bolt moving, it's stripped! $*@*^#^##@!!!!! SERIOUSLY? WHO THE HELL TIGHTENED IT SO DAMN MUCH! IT WAS ATLEAST DOUBLE THE TORQUE NEEDED!:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::ma d: By now the sun was all but gone and my patience was long gone so I will just order a replacement sump plug and fight to get it out next weekend.

So I don't know what nutjob worked on it last, but they seem to have felt the need for far too much torque on every damn nut and bolt they have done up in the car. Now I'm out several hours of wasted time, have a stripped sump plug and potentially seized driveshaft splines in my hubs. And I have 2 coolant leaks, although they seem to be a case of poor pipe seating and clamping.

I am particularly peeved because I am legally allowed to start driving the car next weekend and wanted to have everything sorted so I could go for a nice relaxing drive, now I have more work to do before then.

I found the t45 was looseish on my C, gave it a full turn with a standard ratchet (not even getting the breaker bar out) and long behold bits of the plug fall on my face.

I though it was because the plug was plastic but maybe its because it was torqued too tight. Id love to get a standard hex nut replacement sump like NORMAL cars have

currently when i do oil changes im using a siphoning pump down the dipstick, its not fool proof and i dont like doing it but i need to do something to change the oil.

I had half a mind to take it to a shop to get the thing drilled out and a standard one put in, no idea where to go on the coast though, all the mechanics around here are either Midas or ultra tune, and i dont fancy paying for a 14 year old boy with a power tool to get near my z18xe

the B0443 was because i unplugged that ticking thing under the bonnet as i read somewhere that it has some influence on the EGR valve and as stated before i dont like the idea of having unmetered exhaust gas enter the engine a second time, pretty sure this is why the car keeps coughing and spluttering and misfiring. tried a second coil pack off a mates astra (also with the 1.8) and same thing so its not the coil pack, havnt removed the egr yet but wouldnt mind getting a blanking plate from somewhere. (you said before the astra g has one, but theres one online that lets you keep the egr valve there and plugged in so the ecu doesnt throw a CEL)

I had thought it was the o2 sensor but theres no error codes coming up for them at all.

and the plugs were replaced less than 2 weeks ago.

Installed a dash cam in the Vectra the other day. It seems to be a trend on the increase plus I just can't get over the number of close calls I've had lately with cars who's drivers just don't bother to look both ways and pull out at you. It only cost me $60 on eBay for a front and rear system and whilst the picture isn't fantastic, it'll help if I am unlucky one day. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/27/je5ane3a.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/27/5enuda9u.jpg

Bummer man. :( The one on my Corsa has been perfect, I have a small rachet only about 9cm long that I usually just reach one arm under twist it and it cracks nice and easy. I should have known though with the Astra that when it wasn't enough and I had to get a 30cm bar out it wasn't going to end well even though I was being really careful.

Impatience got the best of me so I gave the stripped sump nut a crack tonight. My father had the idea to use a monkey wrench carefully around the outter lip of the sump plug as it has a bit of an edge. That worked and so we got the plug out, then we cleaned up the torx bit hole because when I it stripped I stopped really quickly and there was still some good left in it if it doesn't get tightened too much. So we put a new o-ring on, oiled it up and popped it back in carefully. I then swapped the filter and put some fresh oil in. The old stuff was really quite black and well overdue by my standards so I will probably do another oil and filter change after 1000km just to flush the system out.

But atleast the good news is that it has healthy oil and I can get the sump plug out now. The new one should arrive in a week or so from the UK. And we are back on track for me to start driving it this weekend!

Hmm interesting, I have never seen one of those. I don't mind a sump plug normally if it isn't over-torqued to strip spec.

As far as the wheel nuts, yeah they were definitely done with air tools set too high, the rust making the wheel seize on was a bit of a concern though.

Yeah I'll definitely be grabbing some stuff. I think the reason it rusted in the first place was because the holden badges have been removed from the center caps, but the clip holes are all still there. So when the car was getting washed or rained on water would get trapped in there and sit. When I pried them out there was some water sitting in them from the rain 2 days before.

Yeah, I've already sanded the rust out and I just used some WD40 that I had on hand as a temporary solution, but I will be getting some proper grease.

What's worse, is when the morons use a rattle gun to do up lock nuts. This happened before I bought the SRi and I couldn't get the back wheels off (ended up stripping the keyways on the bolts) and had to fork out $130 to get a guy to come around and remove the bastard things.

Oh man, that's one of my big concerns. Once I get the new rims for the Astra I should really put some lock nuts on, but I have never seen a locknut I was really confident in as far as not being a tire change away from stripping. I guess if you are the only one touching them they are ok.

I live in a suburb of Adelaide that probably has one of the worst reputations going around (Davoren Park, near Elizabeth aka SA's home of the bogan) and I don't fear someone pinching my wheels. Probably because most don't crap where they eat and secondly, they're not Commodore rims.

I just have to drive all around Sydney for work and often I don't have ideal parking so I'm concerned about leaving my car unattended in places for upto 8 hours at a time. Although I guess a day time robbery is less likely than if I parked in a dodgy spot overnight.

I really like the idea, but I've gotta say, there's no way I'd fit that to my Astra (maybe the Pajero though).. It'd only take one speed bump or driveway taken at the wrong speed or angle and your sump could be torn open. I've had to go pickup my mate's Golf GTI on a trailer for him because he bottomed out his sump and lost all of his oil. Fortunately for him, his car beeped and screamed and had "STOP" on his screen and he managed to catch it before any real damage was done (incredible)...
As much as I don't like the torx plug, it does allow for an exceptionally slimline plug which could be the difference between a good engine and a seized engine. That tap plug simply sticks down too low (for low vehicles anyway).

chris_r

I think given the position of the sump plug on a Z18, if you fitted one of these plugs and were to wipe it out going over speed humps, you've got some serious issues.

Having said that, I'd be willing to give one a shot on the SRi. Z18s are cheap and easy to change. Plus, if I have my way the SRi will be copping a major upgrade by the end of the year.

Didnt think of that, the car does get awfully low in some areas. I was hoping due to the angle the plug is on maybe it wouldnt matter?

Can anyone confirm the thread and size?? i wouldnt mind changing it to a hex head sump plug, you know so you can get a decent socket and breaker bar over it when the tools overtighten it.

Next challenge is finding how to remove it, im thinking some spray deep freeze stuff and hoping there is enough grip around the torx bit.

There was a little, but that's now how we got it off the car, we used a monkey wrench on the outer lip of the plug. It stands out just enough to get a grip on it if you are really careful. You can order a replacement plug and put it in once you get the old one out.

Well, given the position of the sump plug, if your car is scraping the sump, you'd be driving over stuff that you shouldn't be in the first place, as on the Corsa SRi, I'd be sure you would no longer have a front bumper, let alone the splitter. The sump plug, if you haven't seen already points straight downwards. The thread size and pitch for the sump plug (as on most Opels) is M14 x 1.5. I went and ordered one of these valves anyway to see it how it goes. If I'm not happy with how it will sit on the SRi, I'll give it a try on the Kia Pregio (which puts the plug out on a 45 degree angle), seeing as I can usually do an oil and filter change on that without lifting it off the ground.

By the way, the Holden Viva F18D3 engine (which is basically the Daewoo equivalent of the Opel X18XE1 engine) uses a 17mm hex headed sump plug too.

Yeah like Chris said if you knock that drain valve off you've got bigger problems. Obviously it suits some sumps and not others, you wouldn't fit it to something where it would be hanging down below the cross member or something.

missus clipped a kerb in the OPC taking evasive action when a pedestrian walked out in front of her. only 2 tiny marks on the rear driver's side rim, but it tore a massive 20c piece sized chunk out of the rim protector on the tyre. did it's job well but the tyre now looks bloody ugly. then today while out shopping we noticed the passenger side rear has a damned screw stuck in it and will need to be repaired. swapped over to our Focus XR5 and then got rear ended by a P Plate driver!!!! luckily not much damage to the Focus, but it will still have to be repaired.

Well, given the position of the sump plug, if your car is scraping the sump,

Its not scraping the sump, most ive scraped so far is the front bumper on a regular basis, seriously that thing is damn near indestructable.

Still want to put a nice set of kingsprings on it to get it just that extra bit lower.

I shouldnt be but my mind keeps tossing up wether or not to go the supercharger route again,

Im trying to drown the thoughts out with ideas about engine swaps haha

state aside, Is it legal to swap the engine from another car into yours?? e.g. z20let into the C??

I thought the engine had to be from the same car (swapping a 1.8 into the 1.2) as long as it has all the bits the uprated car had.

Or is a blue plate sort of a "i get away with it because the engineer says so" thing?

As long as the motor is age wise newer than the car it's going into its open slather with a mod plate pretty much.

Obviously if you go turbo route if you don't upgrade brakes, suspension etc they pass it. Put a supercharged B16A in it just to be different lol

Well, I won't be buying them, so you don't have to worry about me competing for them. I don't believe my SRi needs to be any lower than it is with stock suspension, even on 17s. I'd probably need to get some decent shocks, as mine have around 230,000kms of wear on them.

Cool! I was considering something like Yokohama Advan Neova AD08s, but the Astra isn't going to see any track use anytime soon so I would rather put those on the Corsa once the KU31s are shot.

Do you know what sort of km you got out of them mate? I have ku31's atm almost on the markers and they still offer great dry grip. Was going to replace with 31's again but since reading about 39's ( didnt even know about them) they are an option aswell

Well they have a treadwear of 280 compared to the treadwear of 360 on the KU31s. So 10,000km sounds about right for a performance FWD car driven spiritedly. But compare that to the Yokohama Advan Neova AD08Rs with a treadwear of 180. So for a street tire they are on the low end, but still quite high if you plan to use them for track days.

The old Kumho KU21s that just came off the Astra were a 420 treadwear lol.

Seeing the basic cross hatch style grille was priced at around 95GBP from LMF, Irmy ones around 150-210GBP. Asked them for a shipping quote and nearly fell over: 120GBP!!! It's just a f***ing grille. Their shipping company must send it first class sitting next to some Hollywood actor or something for it to cost that much.

Nice work, are you running a flexi fuel tune or just setup for E85? Been talking to a guy in the states about running the opc on E85 and apparently the ecu is setup to run the gm flexi fuel it's just a matter of adding a pin to the ecu and a tune it's very tempting.

Just straight e85. The ecu is capable of accepting a flex fuel sensor, but it's untouched ground at the moment for the liberty.

This is why modern turbo diesels are great fun, massive torque down low and especially useful when carrying loads. It's part of the reason that even though I've had many issues with the Hyundai iLoad, I will only buy diesel vans for work (except in the case of the VW, as it was a get me out of the s**t purchase).

Haha, you might be able to use it as a dildo if you like rectangular things in a round hole.....

I always wondered what tuningboxes do and if they do actually work. A few years ago Irmscher made a few these tuningboxes but sold out in the pre-sale period and I guess, being made by Irmscher, these would have been tested by Opel techs too. I got hold of one through a friend of a friend, who's colleague had a neightbor that was married to the cleaning lady of a friend who's boss works in Germany........ think you get the picture here, hard to get but got it extremely cheap. Thought if it doesnt work, nothing is lost but time and some money, my curiosity got the better of me. Standard a16let has 132kw/180bhp and seems to increase to 158kw/215bhp with torque increase from 230 to 280nm (which means it is basically holding overboost) These control the map sensor on the a16let specifically. Now the instructions are all in German and under specific conditions you have to get in touch with Irmscher which I need to do as I cant seem to work out what all the settings are. I did hook it up and it indeed does have some effect to which I am very surprised. Boost increase seems to be present as the car actually dumps when letting go of the throttle. Increase in torque is clearly felt. It tells the ecu the boost level is actually lower than it is in reality. Because this seem to operate within the limits of the original maps on the ecu, there are no errors. Now I still think that a proper remap is the best way to go but if you're in a budget, this does seem to be a nice piece of gear. It also seems to lower fuel usage slightly according to Irmscher. I as told that it was developed together with the people from eds but doubt that as there is no software involved. They might have gotten some pointers from eds but that would be about it. The advertised increases would bring it in line with a regular stage 1 "tune".

I believe so. Replaced them with Turbosmart vac hose that came on a 3 meter roll http://www.turbosmartdirect.com/Product-Categories/Hose/ a few years ago and they worked better than those hard plastic ones.
