Do you get lots of problems with the turbos?

I'm in WA so That makes it more difficult..

Removed the now tacky B Pillar faux carbon fibre black plastic film with a heat gun. It looks so much better with the Arden Blue pillars exposed.
A bit fiddly getting the temp of the heat gun right, so the film would peel off rather than melt. Also getting the contact residue off is painful, but all good in the end.
Also got around to pulling out the panel filter. My filter is hidden by a panel that is attached by 5.5mm self tappers, as well as tabs. The tabs were hard to release, so once out, I clipped them off, as the self tappers are doing the retention job. I left the guide pins for obvious reason. It will be so much easier to access and either clean or replace next time. Hope this tip helps.
Also have the car booked in to replace the passenger side drive shaft following the discovery of a torn inner rubber boot. It is just as easy to replace the whole drive shaft as the outer and inner boots would have to come off and with getting the clips right and with black lithium grease all over the shop, it just doesn't make sense. I will get the oil seal done too, as while it isn't an issue, it may get damaged in the process or become and issue later.
I picked the new drive shaft up on eBay with a two year warranty. Good price too and it looks fine, with new castellated nut, cotter pin and cir clip.
This is only the second time in 50 years of motoring, a boot has failed.

Went and saw my car at the panel beaters. The guy reckons that they will write it off which I'm so angry about, but a positive is that he says I should be fine to take my sub, amp and headunit out..and maybe, if I'm really lucky and give him stock replacements, I can get my headlights and taillights. My SRi rims are gone...apart from that, I'm pretty stuck as to my next move

Be careful what you take out... if the stereo is listed on your policy and they write the car off then they own the stereo. If it's not listed then you're ok to take it out and just put a stocker in it's place. Don't take the panel beater's word for it, check your policy because it won't be him that they go looking for when they find something missing that should be there. You could always call your insurance company and just ask for permission as well ie. when my motorbike was written off they allowed me to remove the aftermarket exhaust on the condition i re-fit the stock one but that was totally their call as they owned it.

The reason it appears like this is, being a SRi it has Irmscher front splitter and side skirts, then you have just factory rear bumper.

it is not the rear bumper being high, it is the tyre and guard gap. bigger rims will just make the gap appear smaller but it is still there. With the rear on my astra dropped 80mm it still only just starts to tuck the tyres on 18x8 rims

If you were running smaller wheels with low profiles on them, it'd make the car alot lower too.

Yeah and it throws your speedo out. As I was saying earlier, the rear bumper has more to do with the look of the rear than you think. Where the bottom of the bumper sits is higher than the top of the side skirts. I have seen a couple of Corsa Cs running around Adelaide with some form of aftermarket rear bumper that goes a bit lower, but IMHO, it looks like crap without the rest of the matching kit.

turns out a keyring was the correct size and just as strong as the original pin that holds the ball joint in. havnt tested it yet as it was cutting it too close to work start time, so ended up borrowing my mates slammed n15 pulsar and drove from brissy to the gold coast, made it through the door with 3 mins to spare.

tomorrows task is to source a plastic replacement hopefully from the wreckers here in case my metal linkage fails alltogether or to keep as a backup in the car.

My Brembo's have lasted just on 30k. Please let me know what you think about the Pagids. I'm about the pull the trigger on some Ferodo DS2500s but Regal are pretty adamant the Pagid's are better (though nearly twice as much $$$ by the time they land)

As are all of us

Found the plastic link at the wreckers for $10 (after he found out what car it was off) (gotta love that 100% european mark up :facepalm2: )

installed and then found the gear stick was out of place as they had modified its position when i had the metal linkage setup installed.

got under the car to undo the bolt and after an initial break with the ratchet, it was finger loose. Uh oh.

Idiots have either rattled the bolt in or used a breaker bar, lucky for me the entire bolt was stripped however the thread where it bolts into was in tact. Unlucky for me there was no thread on the bolt to go by so after a few guesses I found the right one, gear stick is positioned and secured, all seems well, so to celebrate ill be installing my astra sri seats which I picked up for a whopping $90 :D

and then performing much needed drivers therapy in the form of a mountain run.

My Brembo's have lasted just on 30k. Please let me know what you think about the Pagids. I'm about the pull the trigger on some Ferodo DS2500s but Regal are pretty adamant the Pagid's are better (though nearly twice as much $$$ by the time they land)

Pads are good. I just made sure they were bedded in ok. Good feel, no squeaking. Going to a track day on 15th Nov, Will be a test.

Note to self: don't ask Holden for prices on Opel driveshafts. Not when the buggers charge $1900 for a pair of shafts for a SRi-T. Found another guy who can supply me new aftermarket shafts for $280 for the pair. I think that's a fair bit cheaper :P

All I need now is the SoR from DPTI, some hubs (depending on what the SoR says) and a clutch kit. Everything should be arriving in the next week or two, so getting keen on getting to work on fitting the Z20LET. Gonna be fun for sure.

Italian leather gaiter and handbrake boots with red stitching on the way,

keen to see the quality of "Italian leather" for a $30 pricetag though :P

Astra SRI seats in too, not as easy as people think, the upper back is quite hard though and around the waste is not as bolstered as the barina SRI seats however the lower part of the seat is much more bolstered so overall it keeps me in the seat much better :)

gotta love the lumbar support and the lower leg extension part too.

Half my parts are coming from eBay too. It's just I had to ask TX Autosport twice for the tracking number, only to just get said number and find it was only sent yesterday (I put my order in two weeks ago). They also chose to use the Useless Parcel Service because of the weight apparently. I've got this hatred for UPS because their tracking works fine till the parcel hits Melbourne, then there's like two days delay before it gets delivered, whilst the tracking says it's still in Melbourne. Not to mention, they've got that habit of attempting delivery, but not actually attempting delivery.

I notice anything I get from Autovaux sent via UPS is sent to Germany, then through three American states (Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Hawaii), then Sydney and Melbourne before landing in Adelaide. I'd get stuff sent to work, but seeing who I work for, my superiors apparently don't mind if we get stuff sent to work, but I know other divisions of the company aren't so lenient (for security reasons) and for that reason I choose not to. My other half is home most of the time anyway, so it's not an issue to get stuff sent to home.

Separated the F23 from the Z20LET. Took clutch and flywheel out. Looks surprisingly good for a Melbournian engine with 115k on the clock. New C20LET clutch gets here Monday and I'll send the flywheel off for machining. Did notice what appears to be a slight oil leak, but can't see it coming from the rear main seal or the sump for that matter. Thinking it might have been residual oil that may have come from a leaking rocker cover or something like that.

Gotta get my engine stand back from my mate tomorrow, so I can get around to degreasing things and fitting new timing belt and water pump.

Have ordered new conversion hubs from LMF (whose freight was surprisingly reasonable for once) and new wheel bearings locally.

Had a funny thing happen to me.. Was playing round with changing the gear stick cover ( as it turns out will have to do it again).. Anyway as YouTube is your friend in these matters..I proceeded to do as they suggested and that was give the gear knob a good yank..with caution on not pulling it through the front screen of the car..anyway as I was heavy and gently twisting away.. The whole stick comes up and out in to my hands...

I look down and think to myself..jezzz this is not good..as I see that is a plastic ball type setup with a plastic cup holder..
So with a gentle bit of coaching I managed to pop it back in..and so far no problems..lol.. But I was thinking at the time that I had just made a one hour job into a 5 hour job.... ;-)

Didnt feel comfortable forking out $300+ for a GM kit from a supplier with a rating less than 99%

Went for gates branded items as ive used Gates parts before on previous cars and there stuff in my opinion is better than factory for most items.

unsure of the weight of oil ill be using though, previously i used a fully synthetic penrite 15w-60 (the extra +10 that they go on about)

To stick with penrite or swap to castrol edge?? decisions.

I've used Penrite for the last few years in all my cars, it's never let me down.

If you change brands or even grades of oil, remember to run a can of engine flush through it before draining the oil.

I am not an expert but flushing between brand changes are not necessary, i have been told, all oils are more or less same, the additives vary. BUT... flushing the system gets all the dirty old oil out.

Whats the nulon like? I remember it was sort of new to super cheap before I stopped working for them. They claim to have all these low friction benifits which help economy and regain engine power blah blah blah. Didnt buy into it then but they are still around so it must be working.

As for grade is the 15w60 too high still? Didnt notice any adverse effects on the engine with it in there.

Also I use an engine flush between every oil change. Thought thats what the process is.

Different additives are used to achieve different viscosity grades and the methods would probably differ between brands. Most of these additives maybe harmless when mixed together, but some aren't and will result in the formation of sludge.

For the few dollars it cost, especially when it comes to turbo engines, it is worth it to keep everything working well, regardless of whether you're changing oils.

I am happy with Nulon, "some say"... that it is same as top oils but cheaper and it is Australian owned. I put it in the same category as Castrol Edge. I also use Nulon brake fluid and coolant.

Oils also contain anti corrosion, cleaning additives, preservatives and so on but, when you drain the engine and change the filter the system becomes pretty much empty anyway. One thing thou is that when you drain the oil, the engine must be hot so that the thermostat for the oil cooler is open and drain the heat exchanger too.
I guess it does not harm to flush the system. Does the flush have any chemicals that interact with oil additives? And if you use the same brand oil all the time then you would not have different additives reacting with each other...

There is another great Australia oil maker Hi-Tec, but it is harder to find from shops, they mainly supply the trade, Peps sell it though. I once met a lady from the engineering dept, she was an encyclopedia of oils. she explained me the pros and cons of using different oils for different engines and purposes and expressed the importance of using oils that are recommended by the manufacturer in each climate area. The engine designers decide what oil is best for the engine, so they know best. It is all about flow rates and penetration. too thin oil may not keep oil pressure high enough because it flows and leak too easily and fast through the small spaces in the engine and may not reach the farthest corner from the pump. Too high viscosity oil resist too much and may not penetrate tiny gaps where it should, for instance piston rings, there are oil rings first down the bottom of the piston and compression rings at the top. they all need lubrication. if the oil is too thick it may not reach compression rings because it cannot pass through oil rings, resulting in wear.
Also thicker oil resists more when hitting pistons and crank shaft resulting in loss of power at high revs.
However, if the engine is worn out then thicker oil may be used. In Z20LER engine recommended oils are 10-30w and 15-40.

It's an Opel/Holden thing. In Europe, the intervals were initially set at 100k, but when Holden started selling Opels locally, they had a spate of belt breakages before the 100k and put it down to our harsher climate. The fix? Bring the intervals back to 60k.

Thats a breather hose. All crossover delete pipes have it that way. There is very little to no oil that would make it down the length of the breather and into the turbo.

Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk

In my standard 20LER there was about 50ml of oil in the bottom of the intercooler and 20ml in the bottom of the manifold after 150 thousand km. That is considered normal. My view is that any oil in the intake is not necessary and will only do harm rather than good. Currently my breather is fed out until i get a better system in place. Any oily vapour that makes its way to the IC and manifold has to go through the turbo first. Also looking at the picture, any condensed oil in the breather runs downhill to the intake rather than back into the engine.
I understand it from the hose manufacturers point of view, they could not legally sell parts that would not pass rego. Also, the gases from the crankcase contain very little oxygen, they reduce the power at full throttle when the piston bypass is greatest.

What turbulence and eddy will 80mm to 70mm and back to 80mm pipe cause? It is important that any space or pipe that air flows through has a smooth run. Interruptions, either steps in or out cause close wall turbulence where air actually run backwards making the effective diameter smaller than it is. A "trumpet" shape entry or a rounded funnel will create a rotational flow which is the most effective.

adam_92
6th November 2014, 01:42 PM
Dude its an astra, not an f1 car, im well aware of the effect turbulence in pipework can have on a car but you arent going to notice any difference on a daily car.
