View Full Version : Some sad news...

Hi all, I have some sad news to share.
Most of the VIC OA crew already know, but last night my car was involved in an incident where the engine caught fire which quickly spread to the rest of the car.
No one was injured except my pride.
The car was getting fitted with a new VXR turbo, all the work was complete, car was running fine until the mechanic took it for a final drive.
That's what it ended up being... a final drive.
He noticed flames and smoke start come up from under the bonnet, and the car stalled as he was coming to a stop.
Ran across the road to a factory and grabbed their fire extinguisher, emptied the whole lot but by then it was too late.
Fire spread to the interior gutting the everything except the boot.
CFA and Police arrived but obviously nothing they could do.
It's bad enough seeing a burnt out car... when it's your own it's another story.
Car is a total loss but cars can be replaced. Just glad no one got hurt.

Below are some photos from the scene last night. I'll get some more today when I go see the car again.

Still shattered about this. As Guy was saying, its probably the worst way to lose a car imo :(

ahh get ****ed, that is shit mate. any car enthusiast's worst nightmare, as least it is material but you'll never get all the blood, sweat and tears back you poured into it.

where do you stand with insurance on this? is the mechanic negligent? is there a reason that the car suddenly caught fire? oil line not hooked up properly, electrical problem etc. I hope you get fully compen

Wraith
27th June 2012, 12:48 PM
Oh crap...

Bloody hell was thinking after the 1st page don't worry will get all fixed up like new, but that's a total write off by the looks of those daytime pics...

Pauly what's the go with insurance / replacement etc. ?? are you going to get another ??

PaulyJ
27th June 2012, 01:08 PM
I'm fully covered with Shannons and they've deemed it a total loss.
Not sure what I'll do next. Still trying to get over this, and to be honest until I have the cheque in my hand there is nothing I can do.

That's probably a normal reaction with all you've gone through. I'm sure it will pass though when time goes on and the shock subsidies. No rush in making a decision ;)

Wow. Such a nice car gone... You couldn't even salvage the wheels and uprated brakes? Or were they buckled from the heat?

PaulyJ
28th June 2012, 09:45 AM
I wouldn't want to salvage anything for fear they would crack or shatter
As you can see the heat would've been intense, no way I'd risk anyone else using anything off the car.

I can barely look at the pictures, PaulyJ! Definitely has to be the worst way for a car to go. But I am thankful that you are not injured!

[Brings back memories of how I lost my first car...but it was nothing compared to this!]

Surely some responsibility must lie with whoever installed the latest modifications? I mean, the likelihood of a well-maintained Astra G going up in flames...(but then again, I am a noob, so what would I know?)

Regardless, I just hope that insurance will sort it out for you quickly, like they did for me.

And if you ever want another Astra G SRi T...depending on when my wife gets pregnant...I guess we will see, hey?

Wow. Such a nice car gone... You couldn't even salvage the wheels and uprated brakes? Or were they buckled from the heat?

The brake seals would have melted, calipers and discs would be warped, well the fronts anyway.

Sad end for the car, but may have been a blessing in disguise, look forward to see what you get next, maybe something a bit more standard this time =P

Fark me, when I saw the pics on FB, I thought it was a joke, it wasnt.

You got full support from everyone mate, when you are ready to move on, we will all help you move forward. :)

Just thankful you weren't in her and stuck in her when she went up.

I carry a fire extinguisher in the Delorean as I’m worried about an electrical/fuel fire like this. But even so, seems like this was pretty intense. :(

Chin up, it's a car and there are others out there waiting for you to adopt. ;)

Pauly if you thinking of getting another, not sure if there's many around in classifieds or not but I saw an Arden blue TS turbo in a small S/H dealership located in the intersection of Bell and Gilbert Streets in Preston when I was driving by over the weekend...

Just at a glance as the dealership was closed, it looked very straight and untouched or stock condition.

2nd July 2012, 02:56 PM
Jeebus it really did make a mess. I see it was getting another turbo fitted. Any idea what may have cause it?

Sorry for your loss, i couldnt begin to imagine how your feeling. If it were me id be devastated. Long as your still around thats all that matters, could have been a lot worse.
